Why Is My Gully Blocked?

A gully is a drainage system with an open top end that usually has a plastic cover to stop anything that is too large for the drain line it is in charge of to take. A gully can be used in a lot of situations and is seen in many shapes and sizes essentially connecting wastewater outlets or stormwater/rainwater outlets to suitable drains. They can also be used to drain surface water from areas that have a high chance of flooding. Gullies are designed to discharge water from the roadside, your drive, garden, guttering, washing machine, dishwasher, bath, shower and sink into the drain it has been installed. They are composed of a grid to prevent unwanted material falling into the drain, and some sort of water trap that holds just enough water back from the drain to prevent odours from coming back out.

Blockages can occur due to older properties not having what we use today to seal sections in place with the ability to adapt to ground movement, so instead either crack under pressure or dislocate causing severe displacements which hold build-ups of silt, debris, grease, detergent and fat deposits. A displacement in layman's terms is a gap in the pipework where they are no longer held together as first installed so do no longer let wastewater travel efficiently into the main system. These displacements can hold onto anything which isn’t the viscosity of water which causes a dam like structure contained in the pipework. More severe displacements can leak waste water into the ground surrounding them which further away from a property can usually avoid bad smells or dampness from affecting the property but can also still cause damage to the groundwork which would need to be assessed by one of our professionals.
